The Do’s
- Build up to using azelaic acid to avoid irritation (approximately 2-3 weeks.)
- Protect with a minimum SPF 30 (50 preferred) mineral-based broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning and as the last product in your skincare routine. Important to note that azelaic acid makes skin extra sensitive to the sun.
- Use consistently as azelaic has a cumulative effect.
- Use with Spectrum supplement to support your skin health from the inside.
- Layer with other products in your skincare routine to boost improvement.
The Don’ts
- Don’t spot treat acne or overuse azelaic acid to accelerate results as this can cause irritation.
- Avoid using astringents, harsh cleansers with azelaic acid.
- Don’t layer retinoids or other acids with azelaic acid. Separate and use one in the morning, and the other at night.
- Keep from touching or picking at your face as this can lead to infections and scarring.
- Remember to moisturize! This does not and will not cause acne or clogged pores.
- Safeguard your azelaic acid’s effectiveness by keeping it at room temperature and out of the sun.

How many products can I use at a time with azelaic acid?
Use up to 3 treatment products (outside of cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen) in one morning or evening routine to allow penetration into the epidermis. Apply each one in a thin layer, one after the other allowing each layer to dry before applying the next for absorption.
Can I use a retinol or other acid products with azelaic acid?
Yes, but to help avoid irritation, it’s recommended to use azelaic in the morning and your retinol at night — we highly recommend the Night Renewal Cream with 2% Granactive™ Retinoid.
In what order should I layer other skincare products with azelaic acid?
1. Cleanser: Wash and remove impurities
2. Toner: Although most derms don’t really recommend a toner based on the traditional alcohol based products, most of the current toners are just very thin serums or liquids with antioxidants and vitamins. Soaps are not as harsh as they once were so there is no need to neutralize their basic pH in most cases.
3. Serum (or antioxidant): In our case the Vitamin C Lotion 20% and Niacinamide Lotion 10%
4. Retinol: (night only) We recommend Night Renewal Cream with 2% Granactive™ Retinoid
5. Moisturizer: We recommend our Hyaluronic Acid Lotion for its hydrating effect, otherwise a different heavier lotion
6. Active: Azelaic Acid 14% Cream to help skin conditions and can be used day and night depending skin sensitivity
7. Sunscreen: (daily) A minimum of SPF 30, we prefer 50 mineral-based broad-spectrum sunscreen
What exactly is azelaic acid?
Skin-Friendly Antioxidant: As an antioxidant, it helps neutralize the free radicals that lead to environmental damage in all types of skin. We see azelaic acid as a catch-all essential product in any skincare routine.
Naturally Occurring Dicarboxylic Acid: Azelaic Acid is a natural ingredient found in wheat, rye, barley and lab-engineered for stability and effectiveness.
As a dicarboxylic acid, it aids skin exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and promoting skin cell turnover. It is a keratolytic, meaning it can break down the outer layer of skin and minimize thickness, and it is a comedolytic with the ability to help your skin shed properly to open large pores.
Antimicrobial and Anti-inflammatory Properties: It has an antimicrobial effect killing acne causing bacteria and helps prevent acne from developing, while its
anti-inflammatory properties reduce inflammation and redness in both acne and rosacea. Foundation Skincare’s Azelaic cream concentration is 14% (the maximum potency without a prescription that is gentle enough to use without being under the supervision of a dermatologist).
Tyrosinase Inhibitor: Which means it can help control and minimize hyper-pigmentation on the skin, it can even out your skin tone, smooth skin texture and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
Is azelaic acid FDA approved?
Azelaic acid cream 20% (Azelex; Allergan) was approved by the FDA in 1995 for the treatment of mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. In late 2002, azelaic acid gel 15% (Finacea gel) was approved by the FDA for the topical treatment of inflammatory papules and pustules of mild to moderate rosacea.
What are the benefits of Azelaic Acid for your skin?
Azelaic acid has a skin calming effect, treating acne, mild rosacea, redness, and hyperpigmentation. It is great for acne breakouts, scarring, and melasma.
Can you use Azelaic Acid on your face every day?
Yes, you can use it twice a day. If any irritation occurs, cut back to once a day.
