Antioxidant Vitamin Supplement

The sun is the amazing center of our solar system and gives energy for life as we know it.  Unfortunately, the energy from the sun is also one of the worst enemies of your skin.   The sun causes wrinkles, changes in pigmentation that appear as dark or light discolorations, degradation of the skin’s immune system, destroyed collagen, and skin cancer.

Spectrum is an exclusive supplement that combines plant-based antioxidants and key vitamins recommended by dermatologists into one convenient pill.

Spectrum is not a substitute for other forms of sun protection and is not a “sunscreen pill”.  Always use a broad-spectrum  SPF sunscreen and cover-up during the highest UV times of the day.

Please see our FAQ for more information.

NICOTINAMIDE
Nicotinamide is made from vitamin B3, also called niacin. Nicotinamide plays an essential role in energy production and nutrient synthesis.  When UV damages the skin, DNA repair enzymes launch into repairing the damage.  Despite the sophisticated systems we have, they are never able to fix all of the damage. The remaining damage can lead to skin aging and skin cancers.  Nicotinamide helps cells replenish the energy they expend in repairing their DNA and can influence cellular response to DNA damage which may help prevent cancer development.  UV radiation itself suppresses the immune system, nicotinamide has been shown to inhibit UV induced immunosuppression, which may also play a role in skin cancer development.  Nicotinamide does not increase the threshold for UV induced sunburn.
In a key trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine (N Engl J Med 2015; 373:1618-1626), patients with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer were treated with nicotinamide at the same dose as found in SpectrumRx for one year or a placebo.  The group receiving the nicotinamide had a 23% reduction in new skin cancers during the year as compared to patients receiving placebo.
POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS EXTRACT
Polypodium leucotomos (PL) is a tropical fern plant native to Central America and parts of South America. The Mayans even drank it as a tea. Historically, ferns have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient Europe. Polypodium leucotomos has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may explain its ability to prevent damage caused by excessive sun exposure and its helpfulness in ameliorating certain skin conditions.  Extracts have been shown in numerous studies to prevent both UVA- and UVB-induced toxicity and DNA damage through reduction of free radicals.
It is important to note that photoprotection does not imply chemoprevention (prevention of skin cancers) as no studies on the reduction of skin cancers have been published.  It should also be noted that nothing takes the place of topical sunscreens in protecting you from skin cancer.
MILK THISTLE
Milk thistle is a flowering plant that comes from the same family of plants as the daisy. It grows in Mediterranean countries and is used to make natural remedies. The silymarin in milk thistle can also protect the skin from UV ray damage, particularly when applied topically.   Silymarin has been shown to have chemopreventive effects against chemical and photocarcinogenesis in various animal tumor models.  A wide range of in vivo studies support that silymarin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties which may lead to the prevention of skin cancer in in vivo animal models. Nat Prod Res. 2012;26(23):2211-4. Biochem Pharmacol. 2013 Apr 15;85(8):1066-76.
Vitamin D
The importance of vitamin D has received much press over the last few years.  Vitamin D is made in our skin in response to UV radiation.  Many people don’t do this efficiently (darker skin types) and UV exposure is proven to lead to skin cancer.  No matter what roles Vitamin D may play in our health, it better obtained through supplements and is no excuse for unhealthy behavior in the sun.   You cannot obtain Vitamin D from a tanning bed (tanning beds emit mostly UVA, whereas Vitamin D production requires UVB); a tanning bed will dramatically increase your risk of skin cancer.  Period.

Nutritional supplement

The role of herbal products in supporting recovery and treatment of vitiligo and melasma has been of great interest in recent years. We have designed our supplement to support the treatment of pigmentary disorders by a board-certified dermatologist. Your best results will be accomplished with their assistance.

POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS EXTRACT:
Extracts from this fern have significant antioxidant properties and can reduce the damaging effects of light on our DNA and cells.  There is evidence for this component in improving both melasma as well as improving the response of vitiligo patients to light and other therapies.
GINKGO BILOBA:
The ancient tree has been in Chinese traditional medicine since before Western cultures existed. Oxidative stress is know to play a role in pigmentation disorders such as vitiligo and melasma.  Extracts from the leaf of the ginkgo tree possess strong natural antioxidants.  There are small studies showing improvement of patients with vitiligo taking doses found in our formula (Clin Exp Dermatol. 2003 May;28(3):285-7.)
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID:
This naturally occurring antioxidant is essential within our cells for aerobic metabolism.  It is a cofactor for several key enzymatic reactions within our bodies and serves to catch and hold the oxygen free radicals during these reactions.  It is because of this that we regard alpha lipoic acid as an essential and potent antioxidant.
ASCORBIC ACID:
Vitamin C is essential for healthy collagen formation (scurvy anyone?).  Vitamin C is an essential in the repair of tissues and is important for immune function. It also functions as a potent antioxidant.
VITAMIN E
Vitamin E serves as a potent anti-oxidant in our bodies.  Patients taking vitamin E supplementation have been found to be more likely to restore pigmentation with the help of UV light.
Supplementation with a combination of alpha lipoic acid, ascorbic acid and vitamin E has been shown to significantly improve results in patients undergoing light therapy for vitiligo (Clin Exp Dermatol. 2007 Nov;32(6):631-6.)

Nutritional support for methotrexate and other psoriasis treatments

Optimal treatment of psoriasis should be done in conjunction with a board-certified dermatologist.

We have designed our supplement based on recommendations by the National Psoriasis Foundation as well as commonly recommended supplementation by board-certified dermatologists. This is not a cure for psoriasis and is meant to support patients in their ongoing treatment.

Please see our FAQ for more information on psoriasis and treatment options.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Omega-3s are a specific type of polyunsaturated fatty acid, meaning they contain more than one double bond in their chemical structure. The “3” refers to where in the chemical structure the first double bond occurs.

Omega-3s help psoriasis symptoms by reducing inflammation. When they enter the bloodstream, they lubricate the cells of the body. This lubrication can have a healing effect on cells that are particularly in need of it, such as brain cells and cells that make up your joints. This lubrication can also reduce inflammation.

Your body is able to synthesize saturated fatty acids, but you don’t have an enzyme that allows you to stick a double bond in the right spot to create omega-3s yourself. The three omega-3s found in food are:

Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA) can be found in green, leafy vegetables, flaxseeds, chia seeds and canola, walnut and soybean oils.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) is a 20-carbon fatty acid found in oily fish, algae oil and krill oil. Your body is able to synthesize this molecule in its original form.

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is 22-carbon molecule, also found in oily fish, krill oil, and algae oil. Your body will convert some DHA molecules back to EPA’s in order to keep them at fairly equal levels if you consume more DHA.

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is produced naturally in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight, hence its nickname the "Sunshine Vitamin". Although classified as a vitamin, D transforms into a hormone within the body. In this form, it is circulated in the bloodstream to help in the absorption of calcium and phosphorous that is received from digested food sources.  Many patients with psoriasis are deficient in vitamin D at baseline and daily supplementation is needed.  While topical synthetic vitamin Ds are used in psoriasis, these are distinct from oral supplements.

GLUCOSAMINE AND CHONDROITIN
Glucosamine and chondroitin are dietary supplements that can occur naturally in and around the cells in the body. Glucosamine is thought to help collagen formation and repair and possibly inhibit inflammation. Chondroitin is thought to promote elasticity and inhibit the breakdown of collagen.
COLLAGEN
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, especially type 1 collagen. It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system, and tendons. It’s what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, in simplest terms, it’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together.
VITAMIN A
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is good for healthy vision, skin, bones and other tissues in the body. Vitamin A often works as an antioxidant, fighting cell damage, but it also has many other uses.  Preformed vitamin A, also called retinol, is found in animal products. Good sources are fortified milk, eggs, meat, cheese, liver, halibut fish oil, cream, and kidneys. Pro-vitamin A is found in plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables. The most common type of pro-vitamin A is beta-carotene, a carotenoid that produces dark pigments in plant foods. This group of vitamins is used by dermatologists to treat psoriasis and a wide range of other skin conditions.
FOLIC ACID
A folic acid is a form of vitamin B9 that can dissolve in water. It is a key ingredient in the making of the nucleic acid that forms part of all genetic material. Vitamin B9 includes both folate and folic acid and is important for several functions in the body.
Regular consumption of folate or folic acid facilitates unhindered tissue growth and also allows cells to function smoothly.  If a patient is being treated with methotrexate, folic acid supplementation helps to protect against the nausea and bone marrow suppression of the drug.
Warnings:
While you are using our supplement, please follow the steps in the text below. They will help you, no doubt.
  • Smokers, and possibly former smokers, should avoid multivitamins (MVM) products that provide more than 100% of the Daily Value for vitamin A (either as preformed retinol or beta-carotene or some combination of the two) because two studies have linked high supplemental doses of these nutrients with an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers.
  • Taking excess amounts of vitamin A (preformed retinol form, not as beta-carotene) during pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of birth defects in infants.
  • Except in cases of iron deficiency or inadequacy, or unless a physician recommends otherwise, adult males and postmenopausal women should avoid using iron supplements or MVMs containing more than their Recommended Daily Allowance for iron (8 mg/day). Iron supplements may be recommended for women of childbearing age, pregnant women, preterm infants, older infants, and teenage girls because they are at greater risk of developing a deficiency. Yet, iron supplements are a leading cause of poisoning in young children, so parents and guardians should keep iron-containing supplements out of the reach of children.
  • MVMs providing nutrients at or up to 100% of the US recommended daily allowance do not typically interact with medications, but it is always recommended to discuss a supplement with your doctor or pharmacists before taking.
