Niacinamide has become one of the most buzzy skincare ingredients on the market in the past few years – but it has actually been used in cosmetic formulas for decades. With more and more skincare enthusiasts looking to add the ingredient to their routine, many with breakout-prone skin are wondering: does niacinamide help with acne? Dr. Anthony Nuara, MD PhD FAAD is here to answer that question, and discuss the range of niacinamide’s uses for the skin.

What is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide (also known as nicotinamide) is a form of vitamin B3 that is found naturally in the body. It plays an important role in overall cell health and energy metabolism, and is used in the cellular synthesis of NAD+ and NADP+, both of which are essential cofactors for a range of biochemical reactions.1

In skincare, niacinamide is often added to products like moisturizers and serums. While many formulas are crafted with lower concentrations of the ingredient, the Foundation Skincare Niacinamide Lotion contains a potent 10% concentration. This makes it the ultimate solution for anyone looking to get the maximum benefits from the ingredient.

How Does Niacinamide Benefit Your Skin?

Niacinamide is a multi-tasking ingredient that offers benefits for all skin types. It increases the skin’s production of natural ceramides, which are present in the outer layer of the skin.2 These good fats enhance the skin’s barrier function, bolstering the skin’s ability to defend itself against environmental aggressors. The ceramides also improve moisture retention for softer, more supple skin. Additionally, niacinamide can help increase keratin and other proteins in the skin, supporting a more youthful complexion that is stronger, firmer, and more elastic.2,3

For those with acne-prone skin, niacinamide has been shown to reduce inflammation from acne-causing bacteria, making it a useful addition to any breakout-fighting skincare routine.4 This anti-inflammatory effect means niacinamide can help reduce redness from acne, as well as eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Another way in which niacinamide supports acne-prone skin is by balancing the production of sebum, which is your skin’s natural oil.5 Acne is caused in part by the pores becoming clogged with sebum. By reducing excess sebum, niacinamide minimizes the risk of acne, and also helps refine the pores and limit shine.

As many with acne-prone skin are well aware, pesky post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can stay on the skin long after a blemish heals. If you’re dealing with these dark spots from previous breakouts, niacinamide may help you achieve a more even skin tone. Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin (which is responsible for pigment in the complexion) to the skin, helping to decrease hyperpigmentation.6

How To Use Niacinamide For Acne Prone Skin

For optimal results, apply a small amount of niacinamide twice daily to areas of the skin that are prone to acne. You shouldn’t expect results overnight, but regular, consistent use will ensure you get the best outcome. With twice daily usage, you can expect to start seeing results after about two to four weeks.

How Much Do You Use If You Have Acne?

There’s no need to over apply niacinamide – a thin layer is all you need to get the full benefits of this ingredient. With the Foundation Skincare Niacinamide Lotion 10%, a single pump will cover the entire face.

Are There Side Effects of Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a gentle ingredient that is suitable for all skin types (including sensitive skin), and most people can tolerate using the ingredient topically. However, initially some may experience a small amount of irritation and/or redness. This tends to improve with continued use.

The Niacinamide Lotion 10% is made with hyaluronic acid, a humectant that is gentle on the skin. This ingredient improves hydration levels in the skin, helping to nourish the skin even further.

Improve Your Skin With Foundation Skincare’s Niacinamide Lotion

Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that will support all complexions, including acne-prone skin. The Foundation Skincare Niacinamide Lotion 10% was designed to give the skin the full benefits of this ingredient so that you can effectively target acne and other common skin concerns, including redness, hyperpigmentation, and signs of aging. It also layers well with other skincare products, making it easy for you to seamlessly work the solution into your existing routine.

For the best results, apply the lotion after cleansing and applying other serums that have a lighter texture (as you’ll want to apply your products in order from thinnest to thickest). In the morning, incorporate the Foundation Skincare Azelaic Acid Cream to fight acne while soothing the skin, then follow up with a moisturizer (such as the Foundation Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Lotion) and sunscreen to protect against sun damage. At night, after applying serums and the Niacinamide Lotion, you can again use the Hyaluronic Acid Lotion as a gentle, effective moisturizer. Alternatively, try the granactive retinoid-powered Foundation Skincare Night Renewal Cream to enhance the acne-fighting and anti-aging power of your routine.
